Dr. Peter Fos, University of Texas at Tyler (Secretary)
Peter J. Fos, Ph.D., M.P.H. is an internationally recognized decision scientist and epidemiologist who currently holds the position of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at The University of Texas at Tyler. As Provost, he has the responsibility for undergraduate and graduate programs, sponsored research, university-wide academic advising, and the University Registrar. In addition, he oversees five academic colleges, the Muntz Library, and the Palestine and Longview campuses. Dr. Fos serves as liaison with the offices of The University of Texas System and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board concerning academic issues.
He began his work at The University of University of Texas at Tyler in June 2008 after serving as Dean of the College of Health at The University of Southern Mississippi for four years. At The University of Southern Mississippi, Dr. Fos had the responsibility for undergraduate and graduate programs for 3,000 students in seven departments and schools. Dr. Fos, previous to The University of Southern Mississippi, served as Senior Deputy to the State Health officer and Chief Science Officer at the Mississippi Department of Health from January 2003 until June 2004. At the Mississippi Department of Health he was responsible for the Office of Science and Evaluation, and the Bureaus of Health Decision Science, Vital Statistics, Information Management, and Health Informatics. Dr. Fos currently holds Adjunct Full Professor appointments at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and University of Alabama-Birmingham School of Health Related Professions, and is a Visiting Scholar at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Fos has held faculty positions at the UNLV School of Dental Medicine, where he served as Chair of the Department of Clinical Sciences, and Tulane University School of Health Sciences Center, School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Dr. Fos spent 17 years at Tulane in the Department of Health Systems Management, and served as Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Relations.
Dr. Fos received a Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Dentistry, a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) in Health Systems Management from Tulane University Health Sciences Center School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and a Ph.D. in Health Care Decision Analysis from Tulane University Graduate School. Prior to beginning his career in academics and public health practice, Dr. Fos practiced general dentistry.
Dr. Fos has been honored by receiving recognition for teaching and scholarship. At Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine he has received the Excellence in Teaching Award and the Executive Education Programs Outstanding Faculty Award. He has received the Senior Vice-President’s Teaching Scholar Award in the Tulane University Health Sciences Center, as well as induction into the Society of Teaching Scholars. Tulane University’s President has recognized Dr. Fos on two occasions with the Presidential Senior Faculty Teaching Award in a Graduate Program or Professional School and the Presidential Dissertation Director Award in a Graduate Program or Professional School.
His research interests include: public health system planning and evaluation, spectator sport security management, managerial epidemiology, decision sciences, health status, health disparities, quality of life, patient satisfaction, access to health care, applied artificial intelligence in health care, negotiation, negotiation analysis, clinical effectiveness, and outcomes research. He has written over 50 peer-reviewed articles and technical reports in state, regional, national, and international scholarly journals. He has written several book chapters and two books in health care administration. He has made over 50 peer-reviewed and invited presentations at state, regional, national, and international meetings.
Dr. Fos has received research funding of more than $5.8M from the National Institutes of Health, Health Resources and Services Administration, International Academy of Sports Dentistry, Jewish Endowment Foundation, the Purizer Corporation, Rapides Foundation, Baptist Community Ministries, Louisiana State Department of Health and Hospitals, and the Louisiana State Office of Public Health. He is a member of the American Public Health Association, the Mississippi Public Health Association, the Academy for Sports Dentistry, and the Society for Medical Decision Making.
Dr. Fos is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. He and his wife Lori, have two children, Tammy and Timothy.
